As this woman woke up to a strange noise, she noticed that two squirrels were at her window. Cute rodents were hiding in the corner of the door frame.
She could watch the squirrels hug each other for hours. She especially loved the sweet expressions they had while sleeping.
However, as she examined the animals closely, she suddenly got the shock of her life…
Mia, 44 years old, had a great start to the day. For the first time in years, she had slept well. It had been a long time since she had stayed in bed past seven o’clock.
Her husband and son had gone skiing. While they were on a « guys’ vacation, » the mother could enjoy her freedom. She could do whatever she wanted for a week. Who wouldn’t want that?
It had only been a day since they left the house, and Mia was already enjoying the day. Unfortunately, this freedom wouldn’t last long.
What a great feeling to wake up and not have to do anything. It reminded Mia of her college years. Back then, she could spend the whole day in bed, maybe order a nice breakfast, and watch Netflix all day.
Plus, the house was very quiet and peaceful. « I’ll take a nap before eating, » thought the sleepy woman. She rolled over and closed her eyes again.
« What was that?! » thought Mia and suddenly woke up. But as the voices quieted down, she turned over again. « It was probably something outside. » She turned back to the other side of the bed. She heard the voice again.
A strange, high-pitched sound. She was sure now that the sound was nearby. She listened. « It’s coming from the window! » she said after focusing on the voice for a while.
She got up and approached the window.
There were two small squirrels sleeping in a nest. The voices were coming from here. The curtain in the room had been closed for the past few weeks, so she hadn’t noticed that the adorable animals were building a nest here.
« I have to capture this on camera, » she thought excitedly. She immediately took her camera and took pictures of the cute squirrels. She could hardly believe her luck.
Two squirrel babies huddled in the nest. Mia could feel how peaceful the little animals felt after getting out of bed. Unfortunately, the window wouldn’t open, otherwise she could touch them and stroke their heads.
« Their mother must have left them alone to look for food, » she thought, trying to get the perfect picture from different angles.
Actually, she wanted to take a clear picture of their cute, sleepy faces.
Mia’s whole body started shaking. She was completely stunned by what she saw. « This must be a joke, » she thought to herself. « I hope it’s not true. I must have been mistaken. »
With trembling hands, she took the camera and zoomed in again. There she saw it again. Her face turned pale. She didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t look away. She had never experienced such a situation before.
« Why does this happen to me when my family isn’t home, » she thought. « I have to call them before it’s too late. » She ran to her phone and called her husband.
The woman hoped her husband wasn’t skiing, otherwise he wouldn’t have heard his phone. But Mia was lucky. Mia explained the situation as soon as her husband answered the phone. Her husband replied immediately:
A week passed, Mia and her family waited for the newspaper to arrive at their doorstep. She looked out the window when she saw the boy delivering the newspaper.
Mia immediately called the police, but it would take at least 10 minutes for the police to arrive. « Can’t you come faster?! » she asked hurriedly.
Mia waited at the window until it rang. She liked to act independently, but in such a situation, independent action would not have ended well. A few minutes later, she heard the mailbox and rushed to the front door…
The family members gathered and read the article in the newspaper aloud:
Last week, Mia discovered a squirrel’s nest in her house, but an eagle sitting on a tree opposite threatened the tiny rodents.
Mia called the police in time, and the nest was saved in cooperation with the fire department. The eagle flew away. The squirrel babies were reunited with the mother, whom the firefighters saw hopping out of the garden after the incident.
